Kaila Love was born and raised by her great-grandmother in the Bay Area, CA. She started rapping at age 14, to impress a boy in high school and never stopped. Rapping helped her deal with her struggles from becoming a homeless teen, to becoming the first in her family to graduate college when she received her Bachelors in Political Science from UC Berkeley. She’s been investing in crypto since 2017 and in March of 2021, sold her first music NFT, making her one of the first women rappers to sell her music as an NFT. She went on to author “NFTs for Music."

Kaila Love performs an original song at UC Berkeley's General Commencement, 2014.
Neither one of her parents graduated high school, but Kaila Love went on to earn her B.A. in Political Science from UC Berkeley on a full scholarship. She was even the recipient of the Leadership Award, Cal's most prestigious, non-academic scholarship. She even performed at her college graduation and dedicated her performance to her brother, Michael, who was tragically killed in 2021.
Before he was the "Classic Man" we know today, he was a recent Stanford graduate who had just moved to New York City to start his career. Kaila Love spent her days doing market research, scouting Manhattan for the latest fashion items for him, and attending photo/video shoots.
Jidenna even took Kaila to his mom's house in Boston to help move his home studio into the city. It was there that Kaila started learning the basics of audio, like how to wrap cables, which would inspire her to go on and get a degree in Recording Arts.

Kaila Love's Spoken Word Performance "You Wouldn't Know" for the Write Home Project, 2015.
While applying to college, searching for scholarships, working full-time, and attending an alternative high school, Kaila Love slept her 93' Toyota Camry. Several years later, her friends from UC Berkeley won The National Slam Poetry Championship where they got funding for a poetry project around an issue that affects youth; They chose youth homelessness & asked Kaila Love to share her story. Her video went viral on Upworthy and has been shown in university classes all over the country.
Both inspired by what she had been exposed to in her internship with Jidenna and finding out that less than 5% of audio engineers are women, Kaila Love went on to obtain an A.A. in Recording Arts from Los Medanos College.
It was there that she started moving away from just being an independent artist to delving into the business side of the music industry. Shortly after, she moved to LA and got her first job at a Music Ads Agency, The Rug Factory. She began using the knowledge she learned to help out other artists through initiatives like her #MusicMonday series.

Kaila Love performs an original piece at the 10,000 Degrees One Amazing Night Gala, 2022.
Kaila Love was fortunate enough to receive support from a non-profit called 10,000 Degrees that helps first-generation, low-income students get into and succeed in college. Every summer throughout college, Kaila gave back to the organization through hosting writing workshops and being a staff for their college summer camps. Upon graduating, she began working for them as the Curriculum Development Fellow. She has also performed at five of their annual fundraising galas, helping raise over $5M to programming for first-generation, low-income students.
When she was a freshman at UC Berkeley, Kaila Love attended a Students for Hip Hop Meeting and quickly realized she was outnumbered as there was only one other woman in the club, Rebecca. Three years later, she went on to work with Rebecca (shown in the pic to the right) to guide the club as the president. This is where she cultivated her leadership skills as well as her event curation skills, throwing Hip Hop in the Park - the longest running Hip Hop show in Northern, CA. Under Kaila's leadership, women grew to 45% of the club's gender makeup.

UC Berkeley has a unique program called DeCal (Democratic Education at Cal) which allows a student to teach any topic if they get a faculty sponsor. The Tupac DeCal was a legacy course at UC Berkeley, and was so controversial when it was launched in 1997, that it was featured on Fox News covered by Bill O'Reily. Kaila Love built upon the tradition of the course to not just cover Tupac's life, but also the evolution of Hip Hop, and teaching students the basics of rapping.
After being inspired by a fellow student in her Poetry for the People Class at UC Berkeley, Kaila went on to audition for the Vagina Monologues. The theme of the show was "race, culture, and ethnicity" and she was cast to perform an original piece about her struggles with racial ambiguity. Finding the power in creating with a group of all-women, Kaila wanted to continue her involvement with the Vagina Monologues and was cast as Director for the following year. UC Berkeley is the largest college production of the Vagina Monologues in the US.

Kaila Love & Her Friend Mary on Her Graduation Date, 2017.
Staying true to the mission of ending violence against women, Kaila Love became a certified sexual assault counselor through the non-profit, Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR). This allowed her to be a greater advocate for survivors of sexual assault as well as be a more efficient support for the female students she was working for at the time. Now, she uses this knowledge to provide support and resources for her work helping women in the music industry.
Though retired from battle rap now, Kaila Love began competing in competitions after her good friend, Max AKA Pro2Col, was senselessly killed in 2014. She had always attended his rap battles, but never had the courage to participate herself. After his death, she felt she needed to represent him and the mental barrier that was once there, was lifted. Kaila competed as the only woman for several years, before another female rapper, LiL MC, hit the scene. Kaila Love and LiL MC have continued their friendship ever since, and founded Queens of the Underground, an all-women Hip Hop showcase and professional development platform for women musicians.
